This easy buttercream frosting is perfect for cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. It's smooth, creamy, and can be flavored or colored to match any occasion.

Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 electric mixer handheld or stand mixer
  • 1 spatula

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup unsalted butter Softened (2 sticks)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar Sifted
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream Or milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • pinch salt

Instructions
 

  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter with an electric mixer on medium speed until creamy (about 2-3 minutes).
  • Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, mixing on low speed until combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  • Pour in the heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat on medium speed for an additional 3-5 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more cream until desired consistency is reached.
  • Taste the frosting and add more vanilla extract or a pinch of salt if needed.
  • If you'd like to color the frosting, add a few drops of food coloring and mix until well combined.
  • Use the frosting immediately to decorate your baked goods or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Notes

Make sure the butter is at room temperature for easier mixing.
You can customize this frosting by adding cocoa powder for chocolate buttercream or incorporating other flavor extracts.
This buttercream can also be piped for a decorative finish.
