Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 whisk
  • 6 individual serving glasses
  • 1 spatula
  • 1 knife

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix 15.25 oz
  • 1 cup water for cake mix
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil for cake mix
  • 3 large eggs for cake mix
  • 1 box chocolate instant pudding mix 3.9 oz
  • 2 cups milk for pudding
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar for whipped cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for whipped cream
  • 1 cup chocolate shavings or chocolate chips for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven and prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions using the water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Bake as directed and let it cool completely.
  • Once the cake is cool, cut it into small cubes or pieces.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the chocolate instant pudding mix with 2 cups of milk. Whisk well until the mixture thickens. Set aside.
  • In another mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together until stiff peaks form.
  • Begin layering the trifle in your serving glasses or trifle dish: start with a layer of chocolate cake, followed by a layer of chocolate pudding, then a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers until the glasses are filled, ending with whipped cream on top.
  • Finish the trifle by sprinkling chocolate shavings or chocolate chips over the whipped cream layer.
  • Cover the assembled trifles with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

Feel free to customize the layers by adding fruits like raspberries or bananas for a different flavor profile. You can also use store-bought chocolate cake or brownies to save time. For a gluten-free option, look for gluten-free chocolate cake mix. Adjust the sweetness of the whipped cream based on your preference.
