- 4 large eggs
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Additional nutmeg for garnish.
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup rum or bourbon Optional for alcoholic version.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the 4 large eggs and 1/3 cup granulated sugar until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
Gradually add in the 2 cups of whole milk and the 1 cup of heavy cream, whisking until well combined.
Stir in the 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
If desired, incorporate the 1/2 cup of rum or bourbon for an alcoholic version.
Chill the eggnog in the refrigerator for at least an hour to allow the flavors to meld.
Before serving, give the eggnog a good stir. Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of additional ground nutmeg.
For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the rum or bourbon.
If you prefer a frothier eggnog, you can use an electric mixer to beat the egg mixture until light and fluffy before adding the other ingredients.
Eggnog can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator. Just give it a stir before serving.
